New Works by Waypoint Studio

February 13th 2009 - March 13th 2009

Waypoint Studio was founded in 2004 by Annie Eskelin, Bill Atwood, and John Mueller. Kevin Boylan joined in 2005. The group works in a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, metal fabrication, and glass.
Last year, Waypoint Studio christened Satellite Gallery with their first group show, and it was a great success. This year they will be presenting selected pieces produced in the studio during 2008.

Be sure to make it out to the opening reception on Friday, February 13th from 6 - 9pm to visit with the artists and take in the new work. The show will run until March 13th.

About the Artists

Annie Eskelin: Layers and space are factors that I have been kicking around for these recent works. I have been interested in portraying the underlying structure of various situations for quite some time, and this thinking has transposed itself from cross-sections of bathroom cabinets to, more recently, geologic strata of the Earth’s crust.  Sometimes these cross-sections are the main focus of a piece, and sometimes they are an underlying notion.  My latest work is a twist on the standard landscape, which keeps creeping back into my work, and is also a hint of the environment of our current political situation.

Also shown here are several 2-D mixed media works, which I consider psychological spaces.  These pieces are a counter to the cross-sections, which aim to reveal what one cannot see. These works hide the seemingly main focus of the room, so one can only wonder about what is behind the wall.   These are more fun pieces that hold a more personal notion to me.

Kevin Boylan:  A glassblower and sculptor living in La Grande, Oregon. He graduated from Eastern Oregon University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Art, and has recently attended two summer sessions at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. After graduating from EOU, Kevin began studying glass under Tom Dimond. Now after four years exploring new techniques in glass, Kevin is introducing blown glass elements into his mixed media sculpture. Kevin currently works with Dimond Glass Design in Cove, and Nichols Art Glass in The Dalles. He is also part of Waypoint Studio, an artist co-op, which was instrumental in the formation of The Satellite Gallery in LaGrande.

He has shown work at Carnegie Art Center in Walla Walla and was a featured artist at Crossroads Art Center in Baker City. Most recently Kevin was invited to show at Art Slate in Condon, Oregon; was awarded best in show at Pendleton Art Center regional juried exhibition and Best 3D at Seasons Faire in LaGrande, Oregon.

John Mueller: The new work I am producing has been in part an effort to intentionally go beyond my "safety zone". While I have always strived to experiment with varied materials and diverse conceptual approaches, my boundaries have remained.

The body of work for this year's waypoint Studio show is partially experimental because some of the pieces are quite removed from the level of refinement that I am accustomed to bringing my work to.

Creating the work has been the means and the end.  I have utilized objects from the studio itself as an expression of what it is like to spend time there.
