Art of Place
Satellite Gallery presents "ART OF PLACE" June 18th - July 12th.
Satellite gallery is please to announce "Art of Place" curator by guest Angie Smith. Angie is an alumni of EOU in the arts and is enthusiastic about presenting the art of local artists Linda Gray-McKean and Judith Welch.
The art reflects each artist's individual approach towards the importance of place and this is also reflected in their writings. The show will run from June 18th--July 12th.
Judith is a local artist and EOU alumna. She works primarily in mixed-media, usually beginning with wood and oils and often using materials found in nature from places which have symbolic relevance. The work itself becomes a representational commentary meant to access inner dimensions of thought and emotion while also exploring our transformative heritage and the connections between our places within and our place within the universe.

It's all about life. The details are the same as those around you: struggle, terror, ecstasy, joy-- what it is to be fully human what it takes to be fully alive.
Linda Gray-McKean is a strong, prolific ceramic artist with numerous exhibitions and awards to her name. She has gallery representation from The Real Mother Goose, Portland, Oregon, Crossroads Carnegie Art Center in Baker City, Oregon and the Pendleton Arts Center, Pendleton, Oregon.

Clay is my "place" to listen and be engaged creatively. It is a very physical, impressionable medium. It can be recycled or be transformed into a stony permanence when exposed to the fire. I work primarily with stoneware clay, (a type of clay that is fired to a temperature that transforms it to a point where water cannot pass thru it.) This process of transformation from "mud" to "stone" has fascinated and captured my heart and mind from my first encounter with it in a beginning ceramics course in 1973, and continues to present day. Much as the turtle's shells are their "place" of refuge and rest, clay has become mine. Hearing of the "places" where my turtles and bowls interact and bring enjoyment to others lives, compliments and satisfies my creativity as an artist.
